LTL Quote Checklist: Five Pickup and Delivery Details to Confirm

The pallet count, weight, dimensions, and freight class are important parts of an LTL quote. The pickup and delivery conditions matter, too. A carrier may price extra services separately when the location or handling differs from a standard dock-to-dock move.
Before comparing quotes, ask both facilities these five questions.
1. Is there a usable loading dock or forklift?
Confirm how the freight will be loaded at pickup and unloaded at delivery. If a site lacks a suitable dock or forklift, tell the quoting team whether a liftgate is needed at either end. A liftgate request is different from a request for inside pickup or delivery; specify each service separately.
2. What kind of location will the truck visit?
A residence, school, construction site, military facility, or other secured or limited-access location may have different requirements from a commercial dock. Give the full address and describe the facility. Do not rely on a ZIP code alone to identify access restrictions.
3. Is an appointment or notification required?
Ask whether the facility needs a delivery appointment, advance call, check-in procedure, or specific receiving hours. Provide the receiving contact and phone number, plus any firm deadline. A notification before delivery is not necessarily the same service as a guaranteed appointment window.
4. Can a standard pickup or delivery be completed there?
Check the truck entrance, gate, parking or staging area, and any vehicle-size limits. Note whether the driver will need to enter a building, wait for staff, or handle freight beyond the usual pickup or delivery point. Describe any unusual instruction before the quote is finalized.
5. Does the quote include the requested services?
Read the quote as an all-in comparison. Match each extra service to the correct end of the shipment, and check the applicable carrier rules and tariff. If the pickup date, location, or service plan changes, ask for an updated quote before tendering the freight. Charges and definitions vary by carrier and agreement, so this checklist is a planning aid rather than a price guarantee.
